On January 25th, Hay Springs Public School students traveled to Chadron to compete in the sixth annual “Best of the West Business Invitational” sponsored by CSC and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education. We had 19 students competing in the event.

Sam Orr, a Hay Springs Public School alumni, was our guest speaker today as we explored the culture of Mexico. Sam shared a presentation which covered the following topics: flag, location, size, travel requirements, weather, food, language, Mariachi music, money, homemade fireworks, and the crafters market on wheels. Mexican dishes start with these main ingredients: tomato, onion, peppers, and garlic. One of Sam’s favorite traditional foods is “Elote” (street corn). The students received the book, P is for Pinata, and Churros for their snack. After the presentation, the 2nd graders enjoyed making Mexican Mirrors. Thank you Sam for taking the time to share with the students. Thank you also to Snow-Redfern Foundation for your generosity that makes these cultural programs possible.

With a possibility of our school needing to make up days due to the snow days this winter, I have looked at the calendar and determined that the following days would be scheduled to be used as make up days if needed.

These are for reference at this time only, we will only schedule make up days if we go over our limit. Right now we are sitting at one snow day left in the bank before we will have to make up days. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Joleen Pieper, Rita Peters, Cheri Johnson, and Marlene Heiting, from the sewing club, came and helped 4th graders hand stitch an Oregon Trail mini quilt. The 4th graders loved learning to sew but they didn’t really want to do a whole quilt by hand.
Today the Hay Springs eSports Mario Kart Team 1 qualified for state finals in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, beating out Wynot, NE by a margin of 88-68. There were some very tense moments during the four races, but Kaden Langford, Emily Nelson, and the Tobiasson Two(Taden and Tanner) fought on and triumphed in the end! The Nebraska State eSports Association State Finals will be held on Friday, February 3rd in York, Nebraska at York College. Hay Springs(Division 4) matches will go from 9:00AM-12:00PM CT/8:00AM-11:00AM MT and will be streamed live at https://www.twitch.tv/nsesa so be sure to watch and cheer on our team!
