On October 2nd, National Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day encourages appreciation to the employees who keep our schools and workplaces across the nation running smoothly. Custodial workers operate behind the scenes. They are often under-appreciated for the hard work they do day after day, too. These are the personnel keeping schools, hospitals, office buildings, museums, churches, and other buildings clean and well maintained. Thank you Ricky, Nate, and Malinda!
On Wednesday, Sep. 27th, the seniors at Hay Springs High School applied to college! Mrs. Pinnt and Connagher Stumpff, a representative from Western Nebraska Community College, assisted students in filling out applications to the schools of their choice, which included 4-year colleges, community colleges, and trade schools. Although some students may decide that college isn’t the right path for them, applying to at least one school allows students to see what’s out there and what kind of offers are available.
Once students have applied to a school, they will receive communication from the college, most likely as an email, letting them know whether they have been accepted, and whether they need to submit any further information. It’s important to pay attention to due dates!

On Tuesday, September 26, Hay Springs Woods and Construction students spent a couple of hours learning how to turn logs into lumber north of town at Beaver Creek Millworks. Perfect weather and the smell of fresh cut cedar makes for a great day!

Date change for the “Smash A Car” STUCO fundraiser for homecoming. Smash A Car will take place October 5th after the volleyball triangular vs. Heimingford/Lakota Tech in the high school parking lot at approximately 7:00 PM. Only 6th – 12th grade are allowed to participate. 1$ per swing or $5 for 6 swings.
As part of the Continuing Improvement Program at Hay Springs Public Schools, we not only measure the academic success of our students, but also the quality of relationships with parents and staff. To measure the perceptions of our school, the committee has prepared a survey specifically for each target group. Your participation in this survey will help us focus our efforts on improving the learning experience for our students, the working environment for our teachers and staff, and our relationships with parents. On Thursday, September 21st, 4th graders enjoyed the morning at Chadron State Park with the Bird Conservatory of the Rockies. We were able to watch birds get banded, learn about different species and study the habitat at the park. Also the students got to ride in the new bus!
Every year the Gordon Lions Club provides every third grade student at Hay Springs with their very own dictionary. Today was our LUCKY day and we received our wonderful gift. These dictionaries are greatly appreciated and used continually throughout the school year. The Third Grade Classroom sends a big THANK YOU out to the Gordon Lions Club for doing this.
