Skype A Scientist

On Monday the 18th of November, the 8th grade science class ‘talked’ via Skype to PhD candidate Melina Giakoumis from City College in New York city. Ms. Giakoumis studies starfish genetics on the east coast of the United States and the east coast of Europe. She is using genetic profiling to study how the starfish are changing over time. Starfish are a keystone species, meaning that when they are present in an ecosystem, that system is much healthier and more diverse. The students are studying how environmental conditions and genetics are linked together in an ecosystem, so this talk was right on point. Earlier this year the 8th grade class talked to PhD candidate Samantha Summer from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. That talk was mostly about how chemists study new molecules and about coming from a small town and going on to college for an advanced degree. Both Ms. Summer and Ms. Giakoumis talked to the students about being in a STEM career. The 7th grade had a presentation from Dr. Quinn Sorenson from UC Berkeley about post fire reforestation programs and ecosystems in general. At the time the 7th graders were studying how living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem interact. This program is free from Skype and is called ‘Skype a Scientist’.

Every member of our Chapter competed in at least one contest and four of our members competed in two contests. We would also like to thank Abigail Russell and Bailey Scherbarth for traveling with us and assisting in conducting the contests.

High School Girls and Boys Basketball

The Hay Springs girls and boys basketball teams had their first practice on Monday, November 18th! Both teams consist of 13 players each. Ron Olson is the head coach for both varsity girls and boys. Linda Kudrna is the assistant for the girls, while Logan Paben and Sonny Salazar are assisting with the boys. The Hawks are excited for their season opener on December 6th, in Hay Springs against Cody-Kilgore. The JV girls will begin play at 3:00 with the JV boys to follow. Girls varsity tip off is scheduled for sometime between 5:30 and 6:00 and the boys should begin play around 7:30. Come support the Hawks and get ready for an exciting season!

4th Grade Spotlight

4th grade is really excited about working with Chaley Jensen and Jade (from the bird conservancy) on our pollinator garden. We received a $750 grant to help us with our project.
We are researching the best plants and flowers to bring in pollinators, and to bloom from spring until fall to help keep our school beautiful! We are hoping to get some donations from our wonderful residence of Hay Springs when they thin out their flower gardens in the spring, as well as we plan to grow a lot of our flowers to help save money.
The plan is to do some landscaping, in front of our school, make a path where people can wander to enjoy flowers, as well as to convert an eye sore to something beautiful!

Horse School

On a beautiful November 19th day, Megan Reimann brought her two Morgan horses, Rusty and Harvey, and showed the preschool and first grade classes some of the tricks they know. Rusty demonstrated how he can fetch, play an instrument, and rope a “calf”. Harvey was too shy to dance very much but showed that he knows his colors almost as good as the children, choosing between blue and yellow balloons when asked.

A/B Honor Roll Celebration

Students who were on the A/B Honor Roll for the first quarter were treated to a pleasant surprise this afternoon!  Mr. Hagge called those students in grades 2nd-6th to the football field this afternoon at 3:00 to have a celebration.  The students enjoyed games of kickball and football or even just had a good time visiting with each other on this beautiful 57 degree day in November.  Congratulations to all students at Hay Springs Public Schools for a great first quarter!
