2012-13 was a year of highs and lows. After five consecutive trips to Lincoln, expectations have been very high for the Lady Hawks. With the loss of several perennial all staters over those last five years, one always wonders who will fill those shoes. This was the year to find ourselves, to create a new identity.
Though our losses outweighed our wins, most of our defeats were decided by only a couple of possessions. These close losses were disheartening but they told us that we could be competitive, that every possession is important and that excellence is not always measured by exceptional plays but by consistent execution. While some of these games were uninspiring, some of our wins were the most exciting and gratifying times of the whole year. Towards the end of the year, the girls were playing well and greatly expanded on their win column. I believe many of them were coming to find their roles and becoming more confident and aggressive with each competition.
It will be hard to lose our four seniors next year, not only because of their game contributions, but because of the close friendships and strong leadership. We all know this is how high school athletics, and life, goes. Seasons come and go. They each have their own memories, strengths, weaknesses, trials and laughter. No circumstance will ever be repeated. That is what makes each year special, the wonder of what is to come and the excitement of what may be. So here’s to the Lady Hawks of 2012-13 and to those who will follow.
The 2012-2013 season ended with districts in Sutherland and the state meet at the Century Link Center in Omaha. In Districts we finished runner-up in the 17 team D-4 district. District Champions Chris Ray, Joey Johnson, and Stevin Horrocks plus district runner-up Levi Ray and 4th place finisher Jordan Houser all qualified for the state meet in Omaha. Our other wrestlers at the district meet both won matches and contributed to our runner-up finish, they were Jake Johnson and Kolten Marx. Our final points at District was 103 pts 4.5 points ahead of SMC and 83 points behind Bayard who had 186 points to win the district, but Hay Springs only had 7 wrestlers out of 15 weight classes while Bayard I believe had 13 or 14 weight classes filled. The best news is we had NO seniors on our team so next year’s team will be essentially the same wrestlers but with another year’s experience.
At the state meet 4 of the 5 qualifiers won matches with two placers. Joey Johnson placed 6th and Stevin Horrocks finished in 3rd place ( At the state meet there are 16 wrestlers in each weight class so even 6th place is an accomplishment). As a team we finished in 20th place out of 58 schools that qualified wrestlers for the meet. Again with 2 Soph and 3 Juniors at the State Meet we should be very competitive again next year.
On a personal basis I was voted by the coaches at the district meet as the out-standing coach of District D-4, A surprise award to myself but something that really goes to all the wrestlers and assistant coach Al Rinehart. Even though Wrestling is an individual sport, team awards are due recognition to all the team and coaches.
The 2013 Elders’ Wisdom community celebration will be held on Thursday, April 11 at Hay Springs High School. This year’s honorees are Margaret Bork and Delmer Hindman. As in the past, the evening will feature good food, fine entertainment, and a thoughtful look into the lives of the honorees.
The celebration will begin with a free-will donation supper, which will include a variety of fresh soups and desserts. Supper will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The program will follow at 7:00 pm in the auditorium.
Mistress of Ceremonies Mrs. Beth Jungck promises to deliver an upbeat program featuring the school choirs, short films about the honorees, and other lively entertainment in keeping with the theme of the evening. After gathering oral history from Margaret Bork and Delmer Hindman, the high school Video Production class created the two short films about the honorees. The Video Production class includes Christian Bila, Austin Reed, Patrick Biesterfeld, Laurin Bronson, and teacher Mrs. Efta. We hope that you will join us for the 13th annual Elders’ Wisdom Program!
The toll-free, always-available phone number officers are encouraging the public to call is 1-866-MUST-B-21. Anyone calling can remain anonymous. The number can be used to report underage youth that are attempting to purchase alcohol, are consuming alcohol or are in possession of alcohol. But it doesn’t stop there. The number can also be used to report adults providing alcohol to minors or allowing them to drink on their property, or retailers selling alcohol to kids. The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety established the tipline and coordinates its use.

We may be settling down into the 4th quarter, but your 4th-8th grade students should still be hard at work practicing their 60 minutes a week!
In preparation for our trip to Kansas City NEXT spring we will be doing some different fundraisers. We’ve just completed our Deli International Sales (thanks to all who supported that) and we are going to try our hand at a new fundraiser! It’s called “FLOWER POWER Fundraising.” Please stay tuned for more information, or see any 8th-12th grade music student for more information.
Make sure to “like” the new Music notes facebook page. There are regular posts and updates.
An exciting change for next year… Next year high school swing choir will be a part of the school day! We will meet during the regular choir time! You do NOT have to be in swing choir to be a part of choir, but you WILL have to be in the choir class to be a part of swing choir! This means no more 7am practices-YAY!!
Mrs. Jungck and I will once again be doing a swing choir fun camp! This year we are opening it up to 4th-8th grade. It is tentatively set for the 3rd week in June, the 17th-20th. We are limiting the amount of campers we will take, so make sure to sign up early!!
