In an effort to serve our students locally produced beef in our lunch room, the Hay Springs School Board is excited to announce the start of the Beef to Lunch Program!  Local beef producers may donate a live beef to the school to be processed at a USDA certified packing facility.  The closest plant is KDK Lockers near Scottsbluff.

We are looking for local producers who would like to donate some homegrown beef for out students to enjoy next school year.  If you are interested please contact:

All that is required to you is to call and say you will donate! Greg and Megan Heiting have graciously agreed to donate their time and fuel to pick-up and deliver the live beef donated for this program.  Shavona and Chris Henry have also graciously agreed to donate their time and fuel to pick up the processed beef and deliver it to the school.  To date we have two live beef donated by Aaron and Tara Rasmussen and Sheridan County Livestock Auction.  We are looking for at least 3 or more to fill our freezers.  Let us know if you can help.  Remember this donation can be used as a tax write off!

This year the Journalism class has been using the Treering program to build the yearbook. To purchase a yearbook, buyers must go to www.treering.com, there they are given two pages in which they create and personlize themselves, we are adding a night to help those interested in ordering. . Yearbook staff will be on hand to assest parents and students in creating their pages and ordering thier personalized yearbooks. Please be sure to have the photos you want to have on you 2 personalized pages in digital format, on a CD, SD card etc. Photos must be in jpeg format and sized at 300 dpi. -Have a good laugh and watch the third graders perform their Fabulously Funny Idiom Plays Wednesday, May 16th, at 4:30 in the pit area of the cafeteria.  Open to the public.

-Fifth grade will be presenting a reader’s theater next Wednesday, May 23rd, at about 10:30 in the pit if your class would like to watch.  Should last about 20 minutes I’m guessing.

The fifth graders have been investigating solar energy.  Today, we conducted an experiment to learn which earth materials,  dry soil, wet soil, water, or rocks,  collect and store solar energy most efficiently.  We first placed each cup of material in the sun for 20 minutes, then moved the cups to a shady area where we recorded the temperature every 3 minutes for 21 minutes.  So…which material do you think collected and stored the most solar energy? And which material lost the most solar energy?  Leave your guesses in the comments!

-Incoming Kindergarten students will join Mrs. Mintken from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM today. A parent open house will follow. Kindergarten students need to be 5 before July 31, 2018. Kindergarten Entry Forms: Copy of Certified Birth Certificate, Copy of Social Security card, current eye exam, current Kindergarten physical and updated immunizations.

-Preschool open house will be held from 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM today. Preschool students need to be 3 before July 31, 2018. Preschool Entry Forms: Current immunizations, Copy of Certified Birth Certificate.

At the recent NETA conference in Omaha, School Librarian, Carole Matthews, was one of seven NSLA board members participating in an IGNITE session. Mrs. Matthews’ presentation promoted Hay Springs School and how we use technology. She is finishing her term as secretary of the Nebraska School Librarian Association.
