Three members of the Hay Springs Volunteer Fire Department took time out of their day to meet with elementary students for Fire Safety Week. Craig Housh, Matt Anderson, and Terry Bronson talked with students about the importance of knowing what to do in case of a fire. Please review your family’s plan with your child including: a safe meeting location, how to call 911, knowing their home address, and having a safe exit out of the house.
Entries for the 2018 year-end talent show are due on Monday, May 14th. Entries can be picked up from any teacher or picked up outside Mrs. Varvel’s room.
Hay Springs Public Schools will be hosting Tom O’Day’s Presentation of “Tales of Wyoming’s Outlaw West” as told by Tom O’Day and Bronco Nell on April 24th, in the Auditorium at 2:00 PM (K-5th grade students and staff) and at 3:00 PM (6th -12th grade students and staff). Visit the Wild West with Tom O’Day and Bronco Nell as they tell stories of cattle rustlin’, train robbin’, ridin’ with Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch and more!

The sixth grade class went on a virtual field trip to Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, to visit the rhino barn. The rhino barn is 17,500 square feet. We learned that there was a volcano in Idaho that spewed ash clear to the Ashfall Fossil Beds. The Fossil Beds were once a water hole that became filled with over ten feet of ash. Some of the 12-million-year-old animals we saw were rhinos, horses, camels, saber tooth deer, turtles, and birds. The smaller animals died first because they had smaller lungs so their fossils were on the bottom. One unique thing about Ashfall Fossil Beds is that the ten feet of ash preserved the 3D fossils. This summer will be their 27th summer of exploring this site. They estimate that they STILL have 10 to 15 more years of digging.
Here is something pretty cool–a project that this year’s seniors did as first graders! Due to the wonderful archiving abilities of Mrs. Matthews, our school librarian, we can now take this trip back in time. (Click the link below to view the book.)
The 2018 Elders’ Wisdom program will be taking place at 6:30 PM on Thursday, March 29th in the Hay Springs High School auditorium. The honorees this year are Lloyd and Mary Ann Hunzeker, so please plan on attending this wonderful event! Coffee and dessert will follow the program in the cafeteria.
Today the 3rd grade class had some special visitors! Double Q Country radio station dropped by to present Emma Strotheide a certificate and additional perks, as well as treats for her students as a result of being selected as “The Teacher of the Month”. If you get the chance, stop by and congratulate her on this award. It is a great honor for her and an honor for the Hay Springs School system. We are very proud of you Emma and glad you are on our staff! It was great listening to her students say such nice things about their teacher.
March 1st was the second Family Movie Night. This time featuring “The Lorax” based on the book by Dr. Seuss. After the movie parents and students gathered in the cafeteria for Lorax activities and treats. They made Lorax wraps for milk cartons then planted marigold seeds. There were pictures to color and words games for all ages.
