Class D All State Band

Congratulations to Sam Hindman, Logan DeCoste, Jocelyn Varvel & Gabriel Varvel who were accepted into the 2021 class d all state band! The band is scheduled for Saturday, March 20th with the location TBD.

This is Sam’s third time being selected for the class d all state bands. Sam auditioned for both the jazz band and concert band and was selected as the top tenor sax player in both bands. He had to choose one to participate in and went with the jazz band.

This will be Joce’s third time being selected for the class d all state band. In both of the last 2 years she has been selected as the top baritone player.

This will be Gabriel’s third time being selected for the band, with this also being the his 2nd year as being selected as the top tuba player.

This is Logan’s 2nd time being accepted into class d all state. This year, Logan was selected as the number 2 bari sax player.

This is quite an accomplishment and an honor for these students. If you see them, make sure to congratulate them!

January 2021 Student of the Month

Sam is an extraordinary young man. I am so thrilled to see him receive student of the month. He is always kind to everyone that is around him. He has an infectious smile and a wonderful heart! I loved having him in my classroom and enjoy visiting with him whenever I see him around the school or community.

Sam is one of those rare students who realizes how fortunate we are to be in Hay Springs, NE! He has a positive outlook and generally sees the best in people. He is grateful and appreciative of any extra time teachers spend working with him. Sam has an outstanding work ethic and when he says he will do something, it gets done, oftentimes exceeding expectations. Sam is quick with a witty comment and a laugh that is contagious. An honor well deserved!

Sam has been a student that I can count on to come to class prepared, having completed work before arriving at class. He is constantly looking for new challenges and once he achieves those challenges he’s looking for something more. He is a student who goes above the expectation and encourages others to do more.

Sam’s talents never cease to amaze me. He’s a reader, an excellent writer, he’s kind to everyone, he helps try to steer his class in a better direction when the conversation deteriorates, he’s a gamer, and he’s excellent at reciting poetry and speeches. He’s just all-around fantastic!

Sam is a true leader in the school. He does this by how he carries himself. He treats everybody with respect and is friendly to everyone. His academic skills are top-notch and his talents in his extracurricular activities are amazing. Sam is well-deserving of this honor and will continue to help make our school great!

Hay Springs Scores Second eSports Win

eSports team members Sam Hindman and Kaden Langford racked up their second win of the season last Thursday, Feb. 4th against teams from Alma Public Schools.  Once again, our boys played Super Smash Brothers Ultimate against three teams from Alma and the results speak for themselves:

Week 2 – Hay Springs vs Alma
Alma3 vs HS1 – HS1 2-0
Alma2 vs HS1 – HS1 2-0
Alma1 vs HS1 – HS1 2-0

Kaden and Sam are making a habit of not allowing a single match win to escape their eSports careers thus far!  Can they continue their winning streak?  We will find out when they face Pender Public Schools this Thursday, February 11th at 4:30 PM.  Wish these boys good luck when you see them!

🍀So during the month of February, have your youth work on this BINGO card. Share a picture of your BINGO accomplishments with the extension staff, and receive a surprise at the office by February 26th!🍀

Clover Buds
January 5th, 10-11 am – Zoom. Register for this meeting by calling the office at 308-327-2312. Clover Bud members are youth between the ages of 5 and 7 as of January 1st, 2021. These youth will experience teamwork, social interaction, and decision-making skills while participating in hands on activities. Upon participating in these workshops, youth will have Clover Bud projects to display at the 2021 Sheridan County Fair.

Hay Springs Wins eSport Tournament

On Friday, January 29th, the Hay Springs Hawks eSports team participated in their first tournament. This particular tournament involved the game Super Smash Brothers Ultimate which is played on the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Team members Sam Hindman and Kaden Langford competed against three teams from SEM Public School(Sumner, NE) all from the comfort of our own building thanks to the wonders of online gaming! Since we only have a single team of two players, we ended up playing the best 2 out of 3 matches against each of SEM’s three teams. The final outcome of the tournament was:

Week 1 – SEM vs Hay Springs
SEM3 vs HS1 – HS1 2-0
SEM2 vs HS1 – HS1 2-0
SEM1 vs HS1 – HS1 2-0

Yes, you read correctly, our dynamic duo didn’t even allow the other teams a single match win! Congratulations to both Kaden and Sam for the awesome performance and an amazing first tournament!
