Congratulations to Abigail Nelson and Brooke Winter who placed 6th in duet acting at the Gordon-Rushville speech meet held on Saturday, February 11th. The Hawk speech team will compete in Hemingford at the PANCO speech meet on Saturday, February 18th.
Kathy Willnerd was the guest speaker yesterday for the Ireland cultural presentation at Hay Springs Elementary. Some key points that Kathy discussed were: Ireland’s flag, the national symbol (harp), the potato famine, stone fences, tin whistle, the Blarney Stone, and the Shamrock. Kathy’s husband Steve Willnerd’s great grandparents immigrated from Ireland to America after the potato famine. Kathy made soda bread for the students to try. She also read the book “How to Catch a Leprechaun” and encouraged the kids to go home and build a trap. After the presentation, Jeanie Snyder and Bev Wellnitz went to the 3rd grade classroom and helped the students write limericks. When they were finished writing, they read their limericks to their classmates. The students received the book “Maisie McGillicuddy’s Sheep Got Muddy” and banana bread muffins for a snack. Thank you to the Snow-Redfern Foundation for your generosity that makes these cultural programs possible. Thank you also to Kathy for taking the time to share with the kids about Ireland!
Congratulations to Kaden Langford and Abigail Russell who were selected for High Plains Honor Band and Choir held at Chadron State College on Monday, February 6th and Tuesday, February 7th. Kaden participated in the choir and Abby played the flute in the band.

Hay Springs high school student Emily Nelson signed a letter of intent to play women’s volleyball at Clarke University in Dubuque, IA. In addition to volleyball, Emily has participated in basketball, track, golf, and eSports during her time at Hay Springs while maintaining a 3.275 GPA. Congratulations Emily!

This week is National FBLA Week. In honor of FBLA Week our FBLA chapter is having a few fun activities. There are 4 FBLA symbols hidden around the school. There are two symbols in the elementary and two symbols in the high school. Once you find the symbols return them to Mrs. Sommerville for a prize. There are two jars of candy at the front office for you to guess the number of pieces in each jar. Tonight we will be running concession stands and all of the proceeds will be donated to our local food pantry.

The Hay Springs Hawks eSports team traveled to York, NE to compete on Friday, February 3rd in the NSeSA Winter Season State Finals. The team of four(Kaden Langford, Emily Nelson, Taden Tobiasson, and Tanner Tobiasson) played Mario Kart 8 against the team from Alma, NE. Hay Springs beat Alma in the first of three “cups” 85-71, but then Alma came back in the second cup race and won with a score of 94-62. In the last cup race, Alma really found their groove and ended up beating Hay Springs 100-56. The final score for all three cups was Alma 265 and Hay Springs 203.
After that race, Hay Springs was up again immediately to fight for the Bronze medal against arch-rivals Wynot. Even without a break, the Hawks put the pressure on Wynot early, handily winning the first cup with a score of 92-64. The tension was high at the Hawk table as the individual races of the second cup took place with the Hawks scoring very well in each race. As the final race finished, the excitement from the Team Hawks players was palpable…they had been adding up the scores in their heads and were pretty confident that they had beaten Wynot in the second cup as well. You could have heard a pin drop as everyone waited on the final tally and the announcement…”Hay Springs 95, Wynot 61!” The Hay Springs Hawks erupted with high fives and hugs all around…with a final cup score of 187-125, Hay Springs secured 3rd place at State! After the short celebration, team members congratulated the Wynot players as they walked off stage.
The final placings were as follows: 1st(Gold) place – Cody-Kilgore, 2nd(Silver) place – Alma, 3rd(Bronze) place – Hay Springs, 4th place – Wynot.
The Hay Springs robotics team competed on Saturday, January 28th in Gering at the First Lego League qualifier. The team had a great day of sharing what they learned with judges and running their robot program. The “Bionic Hawks” put in a good showing, but not quite good enough to advance on to the state competition.
Their project build idea was a robot to clear ice from power lines. They interviewed with Craig Housh from Northwest Rural Public Power District to learn more about the problems power lines face during winter weather and Craig Z. from University Nebraska Lincoln to learn about what approaches are being taken currently to keep power lines in working order. The last few moths have been spent studying how electricity is made and delivered to houses. When not busy with that they’ve been building and programing their robot to accomplish the tasks they were assigned.
The “Bionic Hawk” team members are Preston Kelly, Elly Reimann, Grant Wellnitz, Riggen Binger, Jacob Dorshorst, Jax Cuny, and Jayna Cuny.
