In order to help celebrate the 100th day of school, the elementary was invited to a special breakfast. The elementary teachers cooked sausages and pancakes for the kids and helped serve. Why sausages and pancakes? Well, if you lay one sausage link on your tray and put one pancake next to it and another pancake next to that one, you have the number “100”!
Kindergarten and First Grade teamed up to work with the number 100. They made towers out of 100 cups, necklaces with 100 fruit loops, raced to 100 in a dice game, made the number 100 out of legos and many more activities!
In celebration of the 100th Day of School, Kindergarten and 1st Grade were challenged to read 100 books in about half an hour. They were so excited and surprised to find out they read 240! Way to go Rockstar Readers!
Second grade collected coins for a kindness challenge for our former Hawks that are currently in the military. We raised $200 for 5 care packages! Joey and Jake Johnson, Coy and Colton Wolken, and Nate Tobiasson all had a care package made for them. Thanks Hay Springs School for making this happen!!
Second grade had fun sorting and filling the care packages to be mailed. Items in the package were things like stress balls, magazines, a deck of cards, jerky, candy and snacks.
In second grade some chose to dress up like they were 100 years old. Mrs. Vander May had to talk louder and walk slower for all the old folks in the class that day! A few grumpy grandpas wanted to take an afternoon snooze, but there was too much fun learning to do!
Second grade read a chapter book called Flat Stanley His Original Adventure. We learned about a young boy who got flattened by a bulletin board then he mailed himself around the world for epic adventures! Each second grader made their own flat Stanley by coloring, laminated and cutting them out. Then we addressed our envelopes to send him to family and friends around the world. Second Grade walked to the post office to mail off their Flat Stanley and send off the care packages on Monday February 24th.
The elementary students participated in the EnvironArt program on February 19th. This is a unique program that combines the expertise of an artist and a naturalist to bring science and art together. After learning about the importance of waterfowl and their habitats from the naturalist, the artist guides students in creating a realistic drawing of a North American duck, goose, or swan. Students will finalize their drawings in the coming weeks, and we will submit them to the US Fish & Wildlife Service Junior Duck Stamp Contest. All entries help to raise money for waterfowl wetland conservation.
The first Hay Springs Speech Meet was held on Saturday, February 15th. All of the speech students competed well! The following students placed within the top 6 of their given events:

Congratulations to the following students for being selected into Class D All State Band held in Kearney, NE at UNK on Saturday, March 28th: Angelica Volquardsen (Jazz Band); Jocelyn Varvel (Wind Ensemble); Gabriel Varvel (Wind Ensemble); Ashley Tobiasson (Symphonic Band) & Sam Hindman (Symphonic Band) & Mia Skinner (Symphonic Band).
Congratulations to Sam Hindman, Logan DeCoste & Gabe Varvel for being accepted into the CSC Honor Jazz Band. These students will rehearse on Monday evenings from 7-8:30pm with a final concert on Monday, March 23rd from 7-8pm.
4th-6th Grade students will have a program on Tuesday, March 24th at 7pm. 4th & 5th graders will present a musical all about being a good friend that the high school performing arts class has written. The 6th graders will perform Musical Planet where they have researched different countries and perform songs from these countries. The 5th grade & 6th grade bands will also perform. Looking forward to sharing this with you all!
Please give a big Hay Springs Hawks welcome to Ms. Ghita Dykes who recently joined our music team as our new accompanist! We are very thankful to have her aboard! Ghita is working with our 7th/8th grade choir, our high school choir and solo’s and small groups as well as our instrumental solo’s! Keep an eye out for her at our middle level/high school Pre-Contest Concert!

On Saturday, February 15th, middle level and high school students attended Hay Springs High School’s Winter Ball. The middle level dance was first up for the evening with the high school dance following. The event, which took place in the auditorium, had a great turnout and the kids had fun DJing their own dance! Middle level royalty were Queen Ava McKillip(8th grade) and King Jarhett Anderson(8th grade). High School did not choose royalty since they all consider themselves kings and queens(joking!). A huge “thank you” to Mr. and Mrs. Hagge for working to make Winter Ball a memorable night for everyone!
