Pumpkin Investigation

Is there a relationship between the number of lines on a pumpkin and the number of seeds? Or between the circumference of a pumpkin and the number of seeds? Fifth graders explored these questions on Halloween, and while we didn’t come up with a definitive answer, we sure had fun getting our hands dirty!

National FFA Convention and Expo

From October 29th through November 2nd, our chapter advisor and ag teacher, Mr. Lechtenberg and six members of the Hay Springs FFA Chapter (Logan DeCoste, Braydon Binger, Jaiden Anderson, Hannah Hoos, Rylee Wolken, and myself, Jett Rasmussen) visited the great city of Indianapolis for the 92nd annual National FFA Convention and Expo. While there, we met other members from all over the country-places like Ohio, Kentucky, Minnesota, Texas, and many more. Throughout the three days at the convention, we were able to see some amazing national talent performances, got an inspirational and encouraging message from a leadership workshop, listened to speeches by Bob Goff, Michelle Poler, and National FFA Officers, and probably did too much shopping. On the third day of our trip, we were also lucky enough to be given a tour of Purdue University because Mr. Lechtenberg’s brother, Vic, was the former dean of the college of agriculture. When we were given the tour, we got to learn about the fish hatchery, the meat lab, how big the classrooms are, the entomology labs, the “Farmer Olympics,” and even where they brew their own beer! Overall, it was a great experience and an excellent learning opportunity, and although we had some long days, early mornings, and late nights, we would do it all again in a heartbeat. We are all grateful for the chance to go and expand our knowledge of FFA. — Jett Rasmussen

Chemical Reactions

Fifth graders have been learning about properties of matter and chemical reactions.  On Wednesday, we explored the idea that chemical reactions create new materials that have useful and interesting properties.  We then mixed 2 substances together to see if we could cause a chemical reaction, and as a result, a new substance.

PANCO Honor Band

On Wednesday, November 6th the high school band students participated in the PANCO mass band. The PANCO schools band students came together and created one large band, rehearsed throughout the day with a guest clinician, Dr. John Wojick from Chadron State College. They then performed a concert with each school performing a featured selection at the concert. Despite long rehearsals and some pretty scary roads, it was an enjoyable day!

Fun Chairs Donation

During the magazine sales fundraiser for the elementary school, Rayden Starke learned he was the winner of $100.  With the help of this brother, Brecken, and his mom, Mindie, they decided that half the money would go to his bank account and with the other half they would donate fun chairs to Rayden’s kindergarten class.   It was a proud moment when they opened the box and pulled out the chairs.

Kindergarten Halloween

Kindergarten had a busy Halloween week. First, we were construction workers pounding golf tees into pumpkins and then adding rubber bands to finish them off. Next, we constructed houses for ghosts using blocks. Then,we became engineers that made ghost houses out of toothpicks and candy pumpkins.
