Opportunity for Guitar Lessons

music - notes1Has your child ever thought they wanted to play the guitar?  If so, now may be the opportunity they have been looking for.

Hay Springs Public Schools, in collaboration with Sandy Ferrel, and Chadron State College will be offering group guitar lessons free of charge this school year.  Elementary (grades 3-5) classes will be offered after school on Thursdays and Middle School/High School classes will be offered before school on Wednesdays.

A parent/student organizational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th after school in the Elementary School Library.  This will determine student interest and answer questions you may have.

Guitar Rental:  Haggerty’s in Rapid City will rent guitars with cases for $50 for a three-month trial period.  If the student decides to purchase the instrument, the rental will apply to the cost of the guitar, which is approximately $200.

For additional information contact Sandy Ferrel or call the school at (308) 638-4434.

Music Notes

music notes1We are NOT doing practice records this year!  Yes, you heard right, NO PRACTICE RECORDS!  Instead I am implementing a program called “Band Ninja.”  This is an opportunity for students to earn different levels of “belts” (really they are ribbons) that they will tie around their instrument as badges of honor.  Any 6th-8th grade student has a copy of the requirements to earn belts.  If they earn all belts they will have the opportunity to become a “band ninja.” We already have white belt players and several who are now attempting their yellow belt!

We have a new opportunity offered this year called the “After School Band Club (ASBC). ” Mrs. Mikaila Reimer or myslef will be in the music room from 4:15-5:00 Monday-Wednesday for ANY student who is struggling or who wishes to earn a belt for the “band ninja” program.  Of course those overachievers who are pages ahead of the rest of us are also be welcome if they come across something they don’t understand.  We have a few weeks under our belt and have found it to be a huge success!  It’s so encouraging to see the band room filled with 6-10 students every night either looking for help or trying to earn a belt!

The high school band is planning a trip in May of 2014 to Kansas City.  This trip will be at the cost of each student.  We will continue to fundraise, right now we are signed up to do several concession stands this fall-only students who help in the concession stand will receive a portion of the proceeds.  Students can make payments into their accounts held here at the school. Deposits can be turned into Mrs. Varvel.  The trip is projected to cost less than $500 a student; I highly recommend that students try to save or fundraise $200 a quarter. Students who began fund raising last year and/or made payments over the summer have been given a copy of what they currently have in their account.  Stay tuned for more details!

Cafe’teria News

Breakfast: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Your body has not had any nourishment for over 8 hours.  You need to feed your body breakfast so it can think, jump, drive and all the things we ask our bodies to do.  If you don’t have time to eat at home, stop by the Café’teria here at school and grab a breakfast to go or sit and eat with your friends.  Sometimes our students don’t get up in time to eat and are not really that hungry when they get to school. Breakfast to go is a great alternative for them because our students can grab a breakfast to go and put it in their locker.  They can snack on it in between classes.

Lunch: The students and teachers have been enjoying the addition of the boxed lunch as a menu choice during lunch. My biggest challenge has been to guess how many to make each day.  I will have a sign up board for students and staff so I can make sure to meet the demand. Staff can give me a call or email me as well.  The students still love the PBJ’s as a main meal alternative as well as great afterschool snack to get them through athletic practices.

After School Lunch Sales:  The Café’teria is open from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each school day for students and staff to grab left over lunch items, baked goods, fruits & vegetables,  milk or juice. These items can be purchased or charged to the family lunch account.  Students you need to make sure that your parents are okay with you charging additional items to the lunch account.

Special Days for Special People:  The Café’teria will be hosting a special day each month. On this day, students are encouraged to invite someone to eat lunch with them. Adult Lunch is $3.30 which includes the meal and unlimited Fruit & Vegetable Bar.

The 1st special day is in honor of Grandparent’s Day in September. “Invite your grandparents to lunch day” is set for September 23rd. We will be having chicken & noodles.

And of course, you are always welcome to eat with your student.

Life Skills Opportunity

Later in the fall, I would like to offer Life Skills to 7th-12th graders. I have had several students ask for some classes in these areas. Nutrition, Clothing: Sewing and Purchasing, Craft Sewing: Quilting, Dolls, etc., Home Furnishing: Purchasing and Arranging, are just a few things that have come up in conversation. Students and/or their parents who are interested in these kinds of courses or anything having to do with Family Consumer Science,  please contact the school or me personally, and let me know what you would like to take a few hours on a Friday morning to learn about. If it is something I don’t know, I will find someone who can teach it. The school’s number is 308-638-4434 or you can reach me at 308-874-5031.
