  •  Wednesday, Aug. 22nd – Coach’s breakfast from 7:15 to 8:00 a.m. in the cafeteria
  •    Friday, August 31st – Serve meal to players and coaches of both teams after the Rapid City Christian Football game

Our goal is also to continue to host some events for the kids on a quarterly basis and will continue to keep the school and community posted on those events when scheduled.  If anyone has any questions in regards to FCA or wants to become involved please don’t hesitate to give me a call at (308) 320-4445.

Volleyball Season Preview

I am super excited for this year’s season.  This is my first year coaching Volleyball in Hay Springs and I am seeing talent where I didn’t expect it.  This will be a season of change for the Lady Hawks.  We graduated several starters last year, so you will be seeing a revamped roster and system change.  I am extremely optimistic that the returnees and a promising transfer senior can develop into a competitive team.

A season of change will be the theme this year.  The girls are not only adjusting to a new coach but new roles as well.  I have setters who can hit and hitters who can set.  If we can capitalize on this versatility you will see some surprising plays, making for exciting volleyball for the fans.

While the Lady Hawks will miss last year’s seniors, the sophomores are showing a lot of promise on the court and will help fill the void.  Leadership will be coming from returning starters Beth Roberts and Michaela Metcalf along with new student Kodee Muhr, a senior from Harrisburg.   Kodee will be a great asset to the set/hit combo of Roberts and Metcalf.   Another plus point will be junior Stephanie Tlustos who can also step in as a setter or hitter.

The flexibility on our team is also one of the challenges we face.  We will need to utilize the talent wisely and efficiently.  The girls are also going to be working hard on back row play.  In a league as strong as Panhandle Conference, defense will be the name of the game.  We certainly have the ability to be a factor on the defensive end.  At the same time, we are young and we will take some hits; but our goal is to work towards being a competitive team.

Football Season Preview

The Hawks football team should have an exciting year.  We are returning a great bunch of kids that have a lot of experience.  With most everyone knowing the system it will let practices flow smoother and give us more time to fine tune both our offense and defense.

This summer Joe Planansky, Jason Funk, Jason Alcorn, and I put on a football camp for any player from 6th grade on up.  I felt this was an excellent experience for the kids.  We taught a lot of football fundamentals and techniques in three days.  During the camp we stressed on how to be a better person and student by getting a good education, showing integrity, putting forth effort, having a good attitude, and to be disciplined.

This year I am pleased to have coach Alcorn back as a full time assistant.  His knowledge and intensity is a huge benefit to the team.   Coach Jason Funk will be new to the program this year also.  He is a CSC alum, and a hall of famer.  He will help us when he has free time.  Issac and Nick will also be back to help us out again.  It is nice to have great coaches and volunteers. They are invaluable to the hawks.

See you this fall! Coach Turman

Cross Country Season Preview

Cross country is open to boys and girls grades 6th-12th. This fall will be an exciting new year for Hay Springs XC.  We will have small numbers and very young runners that should gain lots of experience this year.

Daniel Hunzeker will be running his first high school meet this year as a freshmen.  Daniel ran in junior high, but now will go against the big dogs running the 5k at high school meets.  Brittany Ferguson, our only returning high school runner, will step up and be our team leader.

We will be selling XC t-shirts as soon as school starts so please contact a member of the team or Coach Mandelko.  Our schedule is also available through the calendar on this site. Please support your XC team…we appreciate it! Coach Mandelko

Music Notes

With year 1 under my belt, I can’t wait to get started on year 2!  Already there are several new additions and new performance opportunities taking place in the music department.

Let’s start with swing choir.  Mrs. Beth Jungck is going to be co-directing this group with me!  We held auditions last spring before school was out.  The 2012-2013 swing choir consists of: Kate Roberts, Brook Scherbarth, Jen Scherbarth, Zoe Schneider , Jordan Encinia, Nate Letcher, Shane Vifquain  & Austin Weyers.  We will again be practicing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:15-7:55.  Rehearsals will begin on Thursday, August 16th.

I am extremely excited with what is happening in our instrumental department.  Numbers are on the rise and I am looking forward to seeing how this group will progress through the year.  I’m hoping you will see a little more of this group!  Right off the bat we will be playing the Star Spangled Banner at the Friendly Festival parade.

Beginning band is making a move into the school day vs. being held after school, which is exciting news for all of us!  The time has not been set in stone yet, but rest assured it will be by the time the students hit the door on the first day of school!  Notes will be sent home with the 5th grade students containing all the information needed that first week of school!

Several groups will be going over to Gordon for the Willow Tree Festival on Sunday, September 9th.  I’m planning on the elementary fun camp swing choir kids performing their “Disney Spectacular” show (we will hold several refresher rehearsals once school is in session), as well as the high school swing choir performing new material we will begin working on right away!  We will be performing from 3:25-4:00 pm.  As the details get all worked out I will be in contact with the students who will be performing!

Another exciting addition to the music department is the addition of the preschool.  If you have a student enrolled in the preschool at the school I am so excited that they will be spending a part of their day with me in the music room!  We will be dancing, singing and playing instruments on a regular basis!  I can’t wait to get started working with these kiddos!

Preschool Welcome

Welcome to Preschool!

I am so excited for the school year to start!  We have a lot planned for preschool this year.  Each day we will have outdoor and indoor play and exploration time, group activities like story time, music and movement, as well as individual activities like art.

Each week we will have a different theme such as a letter of the alphabet, season, holiday, and/or social skill that we will focus on in activities and explorations.

Once the school year begins keep an eye out for weekly correspondence regarding our weekly activities and adventures!  One thing I do ask before school begins is to determine a drop off and pick up plan for your preschooler.  Please let me know your child’s plan on the first day of school!  Thanks!

I am excited to see you all on the first day of school!

Students Headed Back

Students will be headed back to school on Monday, August 13th for a half-day of school. All students need to report by 8:00 a.m. and will be dismissed at noon. NO LUNCH will be served!

Preschool – Parents, please walk your child into the preschool classroom using the main office doors.

Elementary – Students are welcome to bring their supplies into their classroom and then head to the playground. A para will be on duty on the playground to supervise prior to school each day.

Middle & High School – Students will report to the auditorium for an assembly. You will receive your locker numbers, planners, class schedule, and other information at this time.

We are looking forward to another great year!
