Free sewing classes will be starting soon, held at the Extension office in Rushville from 1-4pm! Beginning sewers will be learning the fundamentals and skills needed to create and design beautiful projects! Limited space is available, as there is room for 5 students at each session. September – Gain interest in sewing, start your sewing portfolio, and learn basic sewing skills
October – Learn about color schemes, sewing machine parts, and practice sewing a decorative stitch picture
November – Create a fabric scrapbook, and practice sewing a wrist pincushion
December – Id fabrics, and practice sewing a pillow or pillowcase
January – Determine which fabrics has an electric charge, and practice sewing a drawstring backpack
February – practice sewing a D-ring belt and scrunchie
March – Learn how to take measurements, and practice sewing a spring table runner
April – Learn how to read/cut out a pattern, and practice sewing a pair of shorts or skirt

County Wide Project
The County Wide Project will be held on March 20th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. At this workshop, youth are invited to create a project for Design Decisions and enter at the 2020 Sheridan County Fair. Please register by March 18th, by contacting the Nebraska Extension Sheridan County office at (308) 327-2312. This event is open to anyone interested in weaving.

Baking Basics
The Hay Springs February Baking Basics will be held on March 27th. At this workshop youth will prepare pizza. The youth will also continue to work on their sewing projects. Participants will need to pack a lunch. The fee for this workshop is $10. Please register by March 25th, by contacting the Nebraska Extension Sheridan County office at (308) 327-2312. This event is open to anyone interested in baking and sewing projects.

YQCA in person training
Youth for the Quality Care of Animals training must be completed by June 1st for any 4-H member who is planning to take a livestock project (beef, goat, sheep, swine, rabbit, or poultry). Youth can complete the training online at yqca.learngrow.io with their family 4-H online login for $12 or register online for an in person training for $3. Melissa will be conducting in person trainings on March 2nd at the Hay Springs school after school that day, March 11th at Extension Office at 1 pm, and at the Extension Office on April 13th at 9 am.

4-H Family Movie Night
It’s Nebraska 4-H Month! And in celebration of our 4-Hers, there will be a showing of Spies in Disguise on February 16th at the Gordon Theater at 4:00pm! The 4-H Council is sponsoring the event and the first 50 kids get in free! Parents, Community Partners, and Youth are welcome!

County Wide Project – Design Your Space
The County Wide Project will be held on February 12th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. At this workshop, youth are invited to create a project for Design Your Space and enter at the 2020 Sheridan County Fair. December Baking Basics
The Hay Springs December Baking Basics will be held on December 13th. At this workshop youth will prepare and decorate sugar cookies for Santa’s Bakeshop. Youth will be able to take some of the cookies made home to enjoy, and the other cookies will be shared with elders in the community. The youth will also continue to work on their sewing projects. The fee for this workshop is $10. Please register by December 6th by contacting the Nebraska Extension Sheridan County office at (308) 327-2312. This event is open to anyone interested in baking and sewing projects.

Market Beef Weigh-ins
If your youth is interested in participating in the Market Beef project at the 2020 Fair, they need to participate in a weigh-in. At the weigh-ins, youth will receive a 4-H ear tag along with being weighed. If they attend the Sheridan County weigh-in, the youth will be entered in the Sheridan County Fair Rate of Gain Contest. If the Market Beef animal is a steer they must weigh 1000 pounds at the weigh-in in July and heifers must weigh 900 pounds. The Sheridan County weigh-in will be held on January 26th from 1 to 3 pm at Sheridan Livestock Auction. If the 4-H member is not able to attend this weigh-in, they can attend the weigh-ins at Box Butte County or Dawes County. However, they will not be eligible for the Sheridan County Rate of Gain Contest. The Box Butte County weigh-in will be held on January 5th at the fairgrounds in Hemingford tentatively from 9 to noon and the Dawes County weigh-in is tentatively scheduled for February 1st at Crawford Livestock Auction from 9 to noon. If you are planning on attending another county’s weigh-in, please contact the Sheridan County office to ensure you have the required paperwork.

The youth will continue to work on their sewing project for the year. The fee for this workshop is $10. Youth interested in participating in 4-H throughout this year can enroll at http://ne.4honline.com. If your child is a member of the robotics teams, they will need to register before the competition in January. If you have registered previously, use the same login and password as before. Shooting Sports Practice

Shooting Sports practice for BB Gun and Air Rifle will start on October 7th. They practice from 3:30 to 7 depending on when the youth show up. During October through December, practice is held the first and third Mondays of the month. In January they will start practicing every month and start attending the Panhandle Best Shoots. Youth need to be registered for 4-H to participate. Parents need to sign waivers the first meeting. Please contact Bruce Salisbury or Donna and Kevin Jech for more information.

Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop Offered in Chadron

Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop is scheduled for early October in Chadron. It will be held October 12-13 at the Dawes County Fairgrounds in Chadron. The deadline to register for the Chadron training is October 2nd by 5 pm.

Volunteers have the opportunity to become certified as an adult (21 years and older) or apprentice (14-20 years old) leader. Four project areas will be offered at the Workshop – rifle, shotgun, pistol, and coordinator. The Coordinator certification being offered in Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports is for individuals who work with certified shooting sports leaders, 4-H club leaders for shooting sports projects, or 4-H volunteers managing shooting sports events/competitions.                           

The registration fee is $110.00 per person for initial certification and those individuals adding an additional discipline except for Apprentice Instructors. The registration fee for Apprentice Instructors is $90 for this workshop. This fee includes meals, supplies and program materials. The registration fee after October 2nd is $160. Participants must make their own lodging arrangements. Registration on Saturday runs from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
