Newsweek Magazine Recognizes Hay Springs School
Newsweek Magazine recently recognized the top 500 high schools in the Nation. Hay Springs High School was named one of Newsweek’s “Americas Top High Schools” in 2014. There were only three high schools in Nebraska that were selected for this honor.
Hay Springs High School was ranked 133 out of the 500 top high schools. The other two schools were Burwell, Nebraska, which ranked 479 and Chadron, Nebraska, ranked 433. It’s nice to see two Panhandle schools on this list.
While we are proud of this recognition and have a right to brag, most importantly this recognition is another indicator that shows that we continue to provide a high quality education for our children. If you factor in this National recognition ranking with the Nebraska State Assessment rankings, our ACT test scores, high school graduation rate (100%) and a host of other indicators, it’s clear that Hay Springs Public Schools is not only one of the best schools in Nebraska but now recognized as one of the best schools in the Nation. This is quite an accomplishment for a small, rural, Western Nebraska, school.
I’ve been asked over the last few years how have we accomplished such academic success. Our response is simple; our students work hard, we have a quality professional staff, parents are engaged with their children, our school board is supportive, and we have a community that supports education and its school. This is a winning combination!

Football News
Last week the Hay Springs Hawks traveled to Oshkosh to take on the Garden County Eagles. The Hawks’ offense got started off slow at the start of the game, ending with only 1 touchdown in the first half. The Eagles Scored on the Hawks multiple times, before the Hawk’s defense stiffened up, and stopped the eagles. The Hawks ended the game with only 8 points, while the Eagles scored 72. Chris Ray said, “We had a tough game, and couldn’t really get our offense going. The defense stepped up toward the end of the game, and didn’t allow the Eagles to score too many more points. We plan to work hard this next coming week, and prepare for our next game against Leyton.”
The Preschool Receive a Visit from Local Firemen
Hero. Strong. Courageous. Brave. Honorable. These are just a few of many words that we used to describe firemen. This week (Fire Safety Week) our preschool class received a visit from two of our local firefighters. Matt Anderson and Everett Langford took time out of their busy schedules to teach the afternoon preschool class all about fire safety. We learned how to Stop, Drop and Roll, how to check a door if it is hot, how to crawl out of a burning building and even how to call for help if we are in an emergency. The firemen let us try on their turnout gear and let us try and lift their air tanks….boy are those heavy!! Our favorite part was riding on the fire truck around town. Matt even turned on the siren for us! Throughout the rest of the week you could find us dressing up and pretending to be firemen and help rescue each other. If you happened to walk through the halls this week you may have even heard us making the fire whistle sound!
We want to send a shout out to all of the local firemen who help keep us safe in an emergency. Your dedication and sacrifice for others is truly amazing. Thank you for all that you do!
