First Grade Butterfly Release

Today the first grade class released 18 butterflies. The class has watched their butterflies metamorphosize from caterpillars. Mrs. Marie Nelson and Mrs. Melissa Mracek from our county extension office have visited with us over the past few weeks. They taught us many things about the life cycle of the butterfly and the parts of a butterfly. If you see any painted lady butterflies flying around town, they might be ours!

Trout In The Classroom Field Trip

Fifth graders traveled to Chadron State Park for their Trout in the Classroom field trip. We started off the cool, wet day with some fishing in the pond. We got our hands dirty baiting our hooks and caught several bluegill and a couple smallmouth bass. We even had one student catch his very first fish ever! Next we released our trout. We received these trout eggs in January from Nebraska Game and Parks, and raised them in our classroom fish tank. Students were a little sad to say goodbye. Finally we went on the hunt for aquatic macroinvertebrates aka water bugs. Macroinvertebrates are helpful in determining water quality. The damselfly nymphs and dragonfly nymphs are indicators of potentially good water quality.

Track Time Change

Since there is wind in the forecast for Thursday’s District Track Meet, the start time of the running events has been moved up to 11:20-ish rather than 12:00.  The wind is supposed to pick up in the afternoon a lot worse.

Omaha Music Trip

The Hay Springs music department would like to thank everyone who supported their music trip to Omaha this past weekend. Whether through fund raising or the school for transportation, or just words of encouragement. We had a great time! We went and saw the musical “Wicked”, spent an afternoon at the zoo, went to the Durham Museum, attended a baseball game at Werner park (where the chasers won!!), performed at 2 clinics and wrapped up our time out with a little shopping. Thank you especially to Jamie Bell, Nicole Toof, Jim Varvel, and Tony and Amy Hindman for being our sponsors-couldn’t have done it without you!

eSports Team Takes 3rd At State

On Friday, April 29th, the “Golden Hawks” competed at the 2022 Spring NSeSA State Esports Tournament held at York College in York, NE.  Kaden Langford and Sam Hindman played their first match against Wynot, NE Team 1 at 9:00 AM CT.  The competition was fierce with Wynot managing to pull just ahead of the Hawks in 3 of the 5 games needed to win the match.  Many of the coaches and organizers of the event said that the games were some of the closest they had seen.  Kaden and Sam said they had no regrets and felt that they played extremely well.  The next match the Hawks played was to determine who the 3rd place winners would be.  As fate would have it, they played a second Wynot team(Team 2) and ended up beating them quite soundly thus securing a 3rd place win!  It is rather unfortunate the way the bracket turned out that the Hawks were unable to compete against the team who finished in 2nd place(SEM Team 1).  As our substitute player, Jett Rasmussen, said, “I think we could have come away with the 2nd place medals had we been given a chance to play them.”  In any case, we were very pleased with our performance with this being our first trip to state competitions and “there’s always next year!”
