2nd grade went on a bird banding field trip to Chadron State Park.
“Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (https://www.birdconservancy.org/what-we-do/education/bird-banding/), located in Scottsbluff, offers once-in-a-lifetime field trip opportunities for your students to see science in action, learn about local bird conservation efforts, and have the chance to see a bird in the hand!
Banding enables researchers to determine the variety of bird species in an area and their relative abundance. We can also learn how long birds remain in the area of the banding station, which birds reside there year-round, and which leave during certain seasons.
Because birds are in-hand while banding, each one may be examined for more information. A close look at the feathers may indicate that a bird is molting, while an examination of the belly may reveal that a female is incubating eggs. These observations are critical, for they give us basic knowledge of a species’ life cycle. More than that, we can determine if birds are surviving and reproducing over the years.”
