The Hemingford wrestling dual scheduled for tonight has been postponed to January 31st at 7:00 p.m. due to illness and injury for both the Hawks and the Bobcats.
The first meet of the season has been underway. The Hawks took on one other school at the traditional Crawford Invite. The Hawks went into the tournament with not every wrestler.
Three wrestlers did not wrestle, Kolten Marx, Christopher Ray, and Tyler Merritt. The Hawks still went and competed. In the 126 pound class Charles Jerrell Jr. went one and three; these were his very first ever wrestling matches. Levi Ray competed in the 132 pound class and went undefeated with a record of five and zero. Joseph Johnson was in the 138 pound weight class and went four losing in the championship match. In the 145 pound weight class there was Jake Johnson trying his best to win in the higher weight class; Jake lost all four of his matches. In the 220 pound class Stevin Horrocks won all but one of his three matches.
All in all the Hawks placed sixth with only five wrestlers. The Hawks are ready to keep their success going throughout the year. The next meet is Saturday the 14th of December in Gordon.
JH G/BB on December 12th is going to be played at Morrill’s elementary school. Also, HS Wrestling scheduled for December 12th has been moved to December 19th. This will also be PARENT’S NIGHT. Entry into the event will be non-parishable food. Questions please call the school.
The 2012-2013 season ended with districts in Sutherland and the state meet at the Century Link Center in Omaha. In Districts we finished runner-up in the 17 team D-4 district. District Champions Chris Ray, Joey Johnson, and Stevin Horrocks plus district runner-up Levi Ray and 4th place finisher Jordan Houser all qualified for the state meet in Omaha. Our other wrestlers at the district meet both won matches and contributed to our runner-up finish, they were Jake Johnson and Kolten Marx. Our final points at District was 103 pts 4.5 points ahead of SMC and 83 points behind Bayard who had 186 points to win the district, but Hay Springs only had 7 wrestlers out of 15 weight classes while Bayard I believe had 13 or 14 weight classes filled. The best news is we had NO seniors on our team so next year’s team will be essentially the same wrestlers but with another year’s experience.
At the state meet 4 of the 5 qualifiers won matches with two placers. Joey Johnson placed 6th and Stevin Horrocks finished in 3rd place ( At the state meet there are 16 wrestlers in each weight class so even 6th place is an accomplishment). As a team we finished in 20th place out of 58 schools that qualified wrestlers for the meet. Again with 2 Soph and 3 Juniors at the State Meet we should be very competitive again next year.
On a personal basis I was voted by the coaches at the district meet as the out-standing coach of District D-4, A surprise award to myself but something that really goes to all the wrestlers and assistant coach Al Rinehart. Even though Wrestling is an individual sport, team awards are due recognition to all the team and coaches.

Hay Springs Schools are sending 5 to state wrestling! Congrats to Stevin Horrocks, Chris Ray and Joey Johnson for placing 1st at districts, Levi Ray placed 2nd and Jordan Houser placed 4th. As a team they took 2nd (out of 17 schools) and Coach Planansky was voted “Coach of the Year”! Way to represent Hay Springs Schools Guys! GO GET EM’ AT STATE!
Pep rally for wrestlers going to state will be Tuesday, February 12th at 1:00 pm (old auditorium). Send off will be 8:00 am Wednesday, February 13th.
Concussion Testing
To be in compliance with a new Nebraska State law on concussion awareness in high school athletics Hay Springs Schools will be testing ALL student athletes grades 6-12.
This MUST be done before competition or practice, again this is for all sports not just contact sports. ALL ATHLETES, ALL SPORTS!
Testing will be done:
Monday, August 6th
1:00 p.m.
at Hay Springs High School
The tests, both a cognitive and a spacial test, will be conducted by the physical therapy department for Box Butte General Hospital.
This test will provide a baseline that athletes must meet before returning to play following a concussion.
It will be difficult to schedule a test after this date and may be expensive. Plan on attending om Monday, August 6th.
In only the second year of our revitalized wrestling program and only having freshmen and sophomores on our team we qualified half of our six man team for the state tournament in Omaha at the Century Link Center. The three qualifiers were freshman Levi Ray at 126 lbs, sophomore Joey Johnson at 132 lbs and sophomore Stevin Horrocks at 220 lbs.
Levi lost his first match to state runner-up Mason Klingelhoefer of Amherst and his second match to Garrett Sonderup of Fullerton. Joey lost his first match to Evan Ashcroft the third place finisher from Plainview and his second match was a loss to Cody Brouilett of MCJU.
Sophomore Stevin Horrocks won his first match over Scott Adams of Freeman by a pin in :51 seconds. His second match was to eventual 2 time state champion Jarrod Bazata of Howels by pin in 2:58. In the wrestlebacks Stevin pinned James Starr of Mullen in 4:58 then lost to eventual third place finisher Kalen Pfeiffer of Amherst. Both of his loses were to Seniors and place finishers.
Being a young team and a growing team we are looking for good things next year and a better showing at the state meet. The team placed 48th out of 64 teams with 7 points.
Hay Springs High School sent 50% of their wrestlers to state this year. Three of the six boys qualified at districts for the state competition. The three boys that are competing are Stevin Horrocks, Joe Johnson, and Levi Ray. The other members of the team are Chris Ray, Jordan Houser, and Kolten Marx. This is the first year in several that Hay Springs has had wrestlers qualify for the state competition. At the district competition Stevin and Joe both placed third in their weight classes and Levi placed fourth in his weight class. Jordan lost in the heart-break round and neither Chris nor Kolten made it to the heart-break round.
The boys will be competing in Omaha this week at the Quest Center. The first round takes place on February 16 at 4:30 pm (CT). If you would like to keep track of how the boys do, go to http://www.nsaahome.org/wr.php Stevin is in weight class 220, Levi is weight class 126 and Joe is weight class 132.
