Lady Hawks Start off Season Undefeated
The Lady Hawks had a victorious start to their season at home against the Oelrichs Lady Tigers on Saturday, September 7. It was a close game that went to five sets. The score of the game was 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, and 15-10. Leading the way for the Lady Hawks, Kate Roberts had 14 points, 4 aces, 7 blocks, and 9 kills. Whitney Heiting added 11 points and 4 aces. Steph Tlustos had 18 assists and Cydney Jancik had 9 digs. When asked about the game, Coach Bila said, “We came in underestimating Oelrichs, who had some great servers that made us work hard to earn every point.”
The Lady Hawks were back in action on Tuesday, September 10, when they traveled to Harrisburg to play Banner County and Hemingford in a triangular. The Lady Hawks played Banner County first, and won easily in straight sets, 25-14 and 25-9. Pacing the Lady Hawks was Cydney Jancik with 12 points, 4 aces, and 6 kills. Whitney Heiting had 12 points, 3 aces, and 6 kills, and Steph Tlustos added 12 assists. The second game of the evening was Hay Springs against Hemingford. The Lady Hawks came out with a high energy level and never looked back, beating the Lady Bobcats in two sets, 25-21, 25-17, and bringing their record to 3-0. Mrs. Bila said, “The girls played really hard and we kept a high level of intensity and enthusiasm”. Whitney Heiting led the way with 9 points, 3 aces, and 9 kills. Steph Tlustos and Jesse Heiting had 9 assists each.
The Lady Hawks are back in action Friday, September 13 against Edgemont at home. The game will start at 6 p.m. They will also travel to the Gordon-Rushville Invitational on Saturday, and their first game is against St. Paul at 8 a.m.
Gridiron Boys Take the Field and Volleyball Girls Take the Court
Football and volleyball season is quickly approaching. Both the football and volleyball teams will be soaring to new coaching heights with the addition of new football Head Coach Jason Funk and volleyball Head Coach Val Bila.
When asked about football, Coach Jason Funk said that he has high expectations for this year. Coach Funk also said, “ We have lots of talent and should perform well if we play to our potential.” This years football team includes Mathew Hessler, Joey Johnson, Stevin Horrocks, Jordan Houser, Nate Letcher, Chris Ray, Levi Ray, Jordan Encinia, Dylan Parker, Kolten Marx, Seth Nowak, Riley Abbot, Austin Reed, Jake Johnson, Dakota Heiting, Eli Badje, Zade Henry, Tyler Merritt, Drew Letcher, Garrett Weyers, Kobe Encinia, and Nathan Tobiasson. The hawks kick off the season on August 30th at Morrill.
Val Bila is the new head volleyball coach this year. When asked why she decided to take on the role she said “I haven’t coached for a few years; I’ve been too busy following Christian playing. I’ve really missed it; I am really excited about it!” She has a long history of coaching this sport. She was head coach at Torrington for two years, and assistant coach for four years. She was also head coach at Bridgeport for two years and assistant coach for both Sioux County and Morrill for one year each.
Bila also coached several different club-teams as well. Helping her this year is assistant coach Kyli Heiting, and volunteer assistant Christian Bila. When asked what she expected the season to be like she said, “I am really optimistic that we are going to play well. We will surprise people; they won’t see the same team they saw during summer league. I think we can compete with everybody in our conference, subdistricts, and districts.” Her main goals for the volleyball team this year are to have players work together, play confidently, and have fun while winning. She expects Mitchell and Leyton to be the toughest competition this year. The season will open up on Saturday, September 7, against Arthur at home.

Fall Parents’ Night
This year Volleyball and Football Parent’s Night will be on separate evenings. Volleyball and Cross Country Parent’s Night will be held on Tuesday, October 16th against Hemingford with Football Parent’s Night following on Friday night, October 19 against Potter-Dix. These games are the final home games for the regular season. This will allow parents to enjoy both evenings without having to miss either event.
Volleyball Season Preview
I am super excited for this year’s season. This is my first year coaching Volleyball in Hay Springs and I am seeing talent where I didn’t expect it. This will be a season of change for the Lady Hawks. We graduated several starters last year, so you will be seeing a revamped roster and system change. I am extremely optimistic that the returnees and a promising transfer senior can develop into a competitive team.
A season of change will be the theme this year. The girls are not only adjusting to a new coach but new roles as well. I have setters who can hit and hitters who can set. If we can capitalize on this versatility you will see some surprising plays, making for exciting volleyball for the fans.
While the Lady Hawks will miss last year’s seniors, the sophomores are showing a lot of promise on the court and will help fill the void. Leadership will be coming from returning starters Beth Roberts and Michaela Metcalf along with new student Kodee Muhr, a senior from Harrisburg. Kodee will be a great asset to the set/hit combo of Roberts and Metcalf. Another plus point will be junior Stephanie Tlustos who can also step in as a setter or hitter.
The flexibility on our team is also one of the challenges we face. We will need to utilize the talent wisely and efficiently. The girls are also going to be working hard on back row play. In a league as strong as Panhandle Conference, defense will be the name of the game. We certainly have the ability to be a factor on the defensive end. At the same time, we are young and we will take some hits; but our goal is to work towards being a competitive team.

Concussion Testing
To be in compliance with a new Nebraska State law on concussion awareness in high school athletics Hay Springs Schools will be testing ALL student athletes grades 6-12.
This MUST be done before competition or practice, again this is for all sports not just contact sports. ALL ATHLETES, ALL SPORTS!
Testing will be done:
Monday, August 6th
1:00 p.m.
at Hay Springs High School
The tests, both a cognitive and a spacial test, will be conducted by the physical therapy department for Box Butte General Hospital.
This test will provide a baseline that athletes must meet before returning to play following a concussion.
It will be difficult to schedule a test after this date and may be expensive. Plan on attending om Monday, August 6th.
Aww, Team!
On Saturday October 1, the Hay Springs Lady Hawks traveled down to Cody-Kilgore to play them, Stuart and Hyannis in a Non-Conference game. The games started at 10:30 a.m. The Hay Springs Hawks Varsity Volleyball team lost against the Stuart Broncos in two sets. They also lost against the Hyannis Longhorns by in two sets. They won their game against the Cody-Kilgore Cowgirls in two sets.
Also on October 1 the Hay Springs Junior High volleyball team traveled to Hemingford for Panhandle Conference. The games started at 9 a.m. The first game was against Gordon Rushville. The Hawks lost 19-25 in the first round and 18-25 in the second. The second game was against the Valentine Badgers. The Hawks lost the first round 11-25. They made a close comeback in the second round but did not triumph coming up short 21-25.

On Monday, October 3, the Hay Springs Junior High volleyball team faced off against Gordon Rushville for the second time. The game was at home and started at 4:30p.m. The Hawks were victorious and won their first A game. They played a great game winning 25-13 and 25-22. Their B team was also successful winning 25-15 and 25-14.

Junior High Lady Hawks vs the Hemingford Bobcats
SPIKE!!! The Hay Springs Junior High Volleyball team traveled to Hemingford to play the Bobcats, last Saturday, September 24. The Bobcats defeated the Hawks with the scores being 25 to 13 in the first set and 25 to 17 in the second set.
Katrena commented, “We tried hard but we are going to try harder next time.”
Hay Springs vs. Mitchell
Serve it!!! The Lady Hawks played against the Mitchell Tigers at Hay Springs, last Thursday, September 22 at five O’clock p.m. The Hawks won the first set 25 to 22. Mitchell won the other three with the scores being 20 to 25 in the second set, 17 to 25 in the third, and 23 to 25 in the fourth. Mitchell’s JV team also won the Junior Varsity tournament with the score 25 to 12 in the first set and 25 to 9 in the second set.
