On Thursday, April 25, Elementary HAL students spent the afternoon at the CSC planetarium and geocaching after studying the night sky and orienting this year.

The Elementary raised $722.34 during the Penny Wars. This money will be used to buy every resident at the nursing home a Christmas gift and money will be donated to the Christmas food baskets. 5th grade raised the most money with $186.15. Thank you to all who participated and donated!

On Monday, May 15th, the elementary HAL group traveled to Rapid City for the end-of-year field trip. Our first stop was Outdoor Campus where we  learned about different habitats and adaptations found in the Black Hills and Badlands. Then we went fishing in the pond located at the Outdoor Campus. We caught a variety of fish and even saw a huge snapping turtle! After a quick lunch at Pizza Ranch, we tested our skills at an escape room. Although we didn’t get out in the hour time limit, we had fun!

Elementary HAL students recently worked on making complete circuits with batteries, so they wanted to test making circuits with citrus fruit. Although everything was hooked up correctly, we just couldn’t get the bulb to light up. We learned that sometimes science doesn’t always work they way we think it will. They wrapped up the hour playing chess, checkers, and brain teasers.

Elementary HAL students met after school on Wednesday, January 11th, and explored chain reactions and the transfer of energy with Rube Goldberg machines. They had to troubleshoot and think like engineers to fine tune their ideas. They are already planning on how to improve them for next time.  Be sure to click the links below to check out the videos!

Elementary HAL went to Rushmore Cave to learn about minerals, gems, and the formations in caves including stalagmites and stalactites. After a bit of learning on our tour, we had fun on the roller coaster and zip line!
