The Teen Driver Education for our area is scheduled for June 14^th, 15^th, & June 18th & June 19^th. Arrangements have been made to conduct the classroom portion at the Rushville Middle School. Below is the link to the brochure with information and a registration form for any student still needing one. Parents are welcome to call Instructor Mark VanHorn direct at 308-432-5325. The registration deadline is nearing. Registrations must be received by June 5th.

Summer Camp 2012

New Summer Lunch Program

June 4th will mark the beginning of Hay Springs School’s Summer Lunch program. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides healthy meals to children, age 18 and younger, free of charge. The children do not have to be attending Hay Springs Schools to come and enjoy a lunch. Adults may come and eat for the regular price, $3.20. Menus have already been added to the website and are also available outside the office.

If at all possible, please drop us a line at wendy.palmer@panesu.org or give us a call and let us know that you are planning to take advantage of this new program. Lunches will be served from 11:30 to 12:30, Monday through Thursday.

Hawk Staff Person to Receive Award

Middle School Reading Challenge

Mrs. Kudrna challenged the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to read, read, read! The 6th-8th grade students increased their reading from 11 million words to a whopping 25 million words; from 280 books read to 521 books read.

The school as a whole increased their reading from 30 million words to over 58 millions words; from 1,695 books to 1,987 books!

Way to go!

2012 Drivers’ Education Classes

Drivers Education Classes are starting soon! The classes will be held at three different locations. Hay Springs and Gordon-Rushville will be held together and classes are also offered in Crawford and Chadron. Classes in Chadron will be held May 21-25 from 8a.m. to 12p.m. at Chadron High School. Crawford classes will be May 29-June 2 from 8a.m. to 12p.m. at Crawford High School. Hay Springs and Gordon-Rushville classes will be held June 14, 15, 18, and 19 from 8a.m. to 1p.m. at the Rushville Middle School. Tuition for the classes is $280 and this includes all the student materials. All students must possess a learner’s permit in order to enroll in the classes. Advance registration and payment are also required.

Behind-The-Wheel driving is required for these classes. These times will be scheduled prior to the first classroom meeting. There is no guarantee that the student will be able to do their BTW training during the course dates, so scheduling drive time prior to or after the course dates may be necessary.

Curriculum for the Drivers Education Classes is as follows:

•20 hours of classroom instruction

•5 hours hands-on driving

•5 hours of observation (suggested not required)

•1/2 hour Behind-The-Wheel Drive Test for Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP)

•Driving includes: highway/gravel, parallel/perpendicular/angle parking, marked and unmarked streets/intersections, interstate driving, heavy city traffic driving.

Recently in Video Production class, the students put the finishing touches on independent films they developed as a side project over the past few months. Some of them wanted to share their work. The growth these students have made this year is evident. Please screen these videos and congratulate Marc, Dustin and John when you see them.

Move That Bus!!!

The School Rental House is almost COMPLETE! The shop classes have been working on one of the school’s rental houses throughout the school year, and are almost finished. Mr. Badje’s Shop classes painted the walls, put in new carpeting and redid the floors. They also added some new counters in the kitchen and in the bathroom they put in a new shower and sink. They also put in some windows. Mr. Badje and his classes have been working very hard this school year and the proof is in the pictures!

Early Development Network

Nebraska is a national leader in providing early intervention services for infants and toddlers with disabilities. Thousands of children and their families have benefited from the state’s early intervention program, known as the Early Development Network.

How can the Early Development Network help?
The Early Development Network provides services and supports that are designed based on the needs of children birth to age three and their families with the belief that parents know what is best for their families. These services are designed to act on what families think is important for their child and family. Friendly, supportive people who listen to and respect families staff the Network. These people can connect families with other families who have had similar experiences.

The goal of the Early Development Network is to provide coordinated services for Nebraska families as conveniently as possible. The program helps families to understand their child’s disability and provides assistance in dealing with situations that interfere with the child’s development. Families may choose a particular service or all services. Families also may refuse services at any time.

How do I find out if a child is eligible?
The Early Development Network serves children from birth to age three and their families. A child is eligible for Early Development Network services if he or she is not developing typically, or has been diagnosed with a health condition that will affect his or her development. Identifying such delays or disabilities usually involves both the family and a team of professionals.

If there are concerns that a child is behind in his or her development, people are encouraged to call the Chadron office at 1-308-747-2405 or 1-800-717-1231. Referrals are taken year-round from anyone with concerns, including parents, childcare providers, and others who have obtained the permission of the parents.

Student Checkout May 24, 2012

Each student grades K-12 will receive a check-out slip. Outstanding obligations will be added to the students check-out slip by the corresponding sponsor, librarian, teacher, etc; therefore the office will not be able to tell you what your child owes.

Each classroom teacher will collect book fines for damaged books.
The Librarian will collect payment for lost or damaged books.
The Athletic Director will collect payment for missing uniforms, etc.
Mrs. Palmer will collect Hot Lunch money.

Each fee must be paid separately to the appropriate person/department!

Students last day is May 24, 2012—dismissals will be at regular times—no early outs.
