I am sure that everyone has heard we will be having summer school again this summer. I’m also sure that many of you have questions. Summer school will run from June 4 through June 28. It will start at 8:30 and run until 1:30 pm. We are planning to have a summer lunch program. Details will be made available at a later date. Teachers will be here to help students. At the elementary and middle school levels, students have been assigned summer school based on assessment scores and teacher recommendation. The primary focus will be on reading skills, but some work will also be done in math to help maintain math skills. If a student at the middle school fails a core class they will also need to attend summer school in order to move to the next grade level. At the high school, students who failed a core class will attend summer school to attempt credit recovery. For this summer we will be offering select classes in math, science, English, and social science.
If your elementary or middle school child has been assigned summer school you will be receiving a letter before school is out. If your high school student failed a first semester class you should also receive a letter before school is out. If your child fails a second semester class you will receive a letter shortly after final grades have been posted.
We will be offering a one week summer session for high-ability learners in grades 1-8 in June also. This session will be by invitation only based on student assessment scores. Your child should receive an invitation prior to the end of school if they qualify. Qualifying high school students will also receive an invitation to attend an orientation session and then help with the younger students.
In addition to these we are also again offering a variety of fun summer camps for kids this summer. Flyers will be out soon.

Graduation will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2012 in the Lister-Sage Community Building. The doors will be open to the public at 2:00 p.m. Each family will have reserved seats on the floor. If you do not have a reserved seat, please sit in the stands.
The academic/activity awards program for Grades 6-12 is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2012 in the High School Auditorium. The order of events is below:
5:30 pm: Pot Luck Meal in Cafeteria*
7:00 pm: Awards Program in Auditorium
*Security First Bank will provide the meat. All families participating in the meal need to bring two covered dishes with serving pieces (side, salad, or dessert). Families can drop food off in the cafeteria anytime after 5:00 pm. Students need to be accompanied by their parents. Remember to take your dishes home after the Awards Program.
Families are welcome to go directly to the auditorium at 7:00 pm for the Awards Program, if you do not wish to attend the pot luck dinner.
The elementary awards program is scheduled for Thursday, May 24th, following the Field Day events. It will be held in the school cafeteria. After the awards program, students will return to class for final dismissal.
Mrs. Olson will be holding Kindergarten registration Friday, April 13, 2012 from 8:15 am to 11:30 am in the Kindergarten room. A child must be 5 by July 31st to register. Please bring a copy of your child’s state certified birth certificate, social security number, and immunization record. The 2012 Kindergarten will visit school Thursday, April 19th from 8:00 to 11:00. If you are unable to attend registration, please contact the school at 638-4434.
For teachers, thoughts of spring bring with them thoughts of testing. While testing does take time from classroom instruction, it can also be a valuable tool for teachers and parents. It allows them to see student progress, strengths, and weaknesses. It also helps teachers make instructional decisions for individual students and the whole class. Besides, it’s required by law whether we like it or not.
Students in grades 4, 8, and 11 took the Statewide-writing assessment the end of January or beginning of February. This is a writing assessment that measures student performance on state writing standards. It is given every winter.
Students in grades 2-11 are taking the NWEA MAPS assessments in March. These are computerized assessments in reading, math, language, and science. Teachers shared the available results at Parent Teacher Conferences. If all of your child’s scores were not available at conferences they will be sent home at a later date.
The legislature has also required that we start giving a state test in the areas of reading, math, and science. The reading test is required for students in grades 3 through 8 and 11. It tests vocabulary and comprehension and is an on-line assessment. This is a two day test that will be given in April. Students will also be taking the state math test (NeSA-M) and the state science test (NeSA-S). You will receive results from all of these tests in the fall.
Elementary students were benchmarked this fall and winter using AIMSweb fluency & comprehension. This winter they were also benchmarked using AIMSweb math. They will be benchmarked for spring before school is out. Teachers should have shared the results from the fall and winter benchmarks at parent-teacher conferences.
Actual test dates have not been set for all tests at this time; however, your child’s teacher should notify them of an impending test. You can help your child by remembering it is important for him/her to get a good night’s sleep before testing and to eat a good breakfast. Also remind your child that these tests are important and encourage him/her to do their best. If you have any questions about these or other assessments please talk with your child’s teacher or contact Mrs. Marx at the school. She would be happy to answer any questions you have.
On March 29th, the senior class of Hay Springs will join Seniors from Gordon-Rushville and participate in the annual County Government Day. County Government Day was started in 1942 to educate high school seniors about how local government works. The American Legion Posts and the Auxiliaries from Hay Springs, Rushville and Gordon go together to sponsor the event. The Auxiliaries provide the midday meal.
Each senior will shadow a county court officer for the day. They will see what each officer does in the course of their day. Seniors will find out how county government works and how local tax money is allocated.
At Hay Springs High School, the seniors campaign for four different offices and the student body chooses the winners. Any one not winning election was appointed to another office. This year the offices will be held by the following people.

The 1st grade room was a little crowded on March 8th as parents and family members joined their students at school for Math & Muffins. The idea behind Math & Muffins was to involve family members in the learning process. While enjoying juice and muffins family members and kids played math games to reinforce what’s being learned in the classroom. It was a very successful event and the students are already asking when we can do it again!
We started the afternoon celebration with the ebook The Lorax. Many students knew that The Lorax movie opened in theaters last Friday. The National Honor Society took over as the classes went to separate rooms.
The fourth and fifth grade talked about the Lorax then drew their own versions of the Once-ler. As everyone knows, you only see his hands in the book.
The second and third graders listened to My Many Colored Days then colored their personal version of their “colored day.” While they worked, Mrs. Binger read Fox in Socks to the group. This book will tie anyone’s tongue in a knot.
Kindergarten and first grade did a Lorax color by number picture, but had to do some math to figure out what colors to use. They finished by listening to The Cat in the Hat.
The celebration finished with Laurin and Jordan doing a duet reading of Green Eggs and Ham.
The planning of Summer Fun Camps 2012 is under way. This year our Summer Fun Camps are planned for June 4th to 28th. We are expanding our schedule by incorporating full day and half day camps. Camp leaders may also choose from 1 day, 2 day, or 4 day camps.
We are looking for individuals and community groups who are interested in leading a camp this summer. If you would like to put your special talents or interests to use, join us in leading a fun summer camp this year. We would like all camp proposals as soon as possible. The camp brochures are scheduled to be published and out to the public no later than May 1, 2012.
Summer Fun Camp 2012 Camp Worksheet
All school districts in the State of Nebraska anxiously awaited the results of the Nebraska State Assessment test, which were released by the Nebraska Department of Education on November 8. These tests determine which schools met AYP (adequate yearly progress) and which schools were on the PLAS list (Persistently Lowest Achieving Schools). For Hay Springs Public Schools it was another year of excellent news.
All schools at Hay Springs (elementary, middle level, and high school) met AYP. Not only did they meet AYP but we were one of the highest achieving schools in the area on this assessment test. We outscored neighboring districts at most grade levels in both Reading and Math.
The State of Nebraska also released the schools on the PLAS List (Persistently Lowest Achieving Schools). The PLAS list categorizes the lowest performing schools into three categories: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. Again, Hay Springs Public Schools is not on the PLAS list.
Two years ago Hay Springs did not make AYP at the Middle Level and High School and was on the PLAS List at the Middle Level and High School. We took the low ranking very seriously and addressed our academic challenges head on. The staff addressed attendance, created mandatory remedial programs, scheduled summer school for students failing classes, focused on curricular needs, improved instruction, and encouraged students to be responsible for their own learning. We are pleased that our efforts have been successful.
Take time to celebrate our success, show your appreciation to a teacher, support personnel, and school board members. Acknowledge a student’s effort and hard work, and recognize we have many outstanding parents that support education, expecting their child to learn and be successful.
