Read Across America – Place Your Vote

Read Across America

Although Dr. Seuss’s birthday is March 2, the Hay Springs Elementary celebrated on Thursday.  Joining them were members of National Honor Society. The high school students read Dr. Seuss books and lead activities related to the various titles.

The pre-school and kindergarten enjoyed One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and created their own fish bowls complete with handprint fish.  After listening to Cat in the Hat Comes Back each student made their own “Cat in the Hat” hat.

The first and second grade heard Cat in the Hat, then told what they would do if Thing One and Thing Two came to their house.  After reading about the fantastic animals in If I Ran the Zoo, the students created their own fantastic animals and put them in zoo cages.

Third, fourth, and fifth started out listening to To Think I Saw it All on Mulberry Street in which a boy imagines all kinds other things he saw on his way home from school. They then drew pictures of amazing things that might be seen on Baker Street filling up a mural on the wall outside Mrs. Strotheide’s room.  They finished the day with Oh, the Places You Go.  Each students created their own bucket list of places to go and things to see and things to do.

Checkout the fish bowls, zoo animals, and Baker Street mural in the library during Parent Teacher Conferences.  Also check out our decorated doors and vote for your favorite one.

Summer Camp 2015 Planning Under Way

Dear Potential Camp Leader,
During the 2014 Summer school we had over 70 students attend our 12 camps. These camps provided students the opportunity to learn new skills, socialize with other kids, and get to know the volunteers in the community.
This year our Summer “Fun” Camps are planned for June 1st through the 25th. We are continuing with our expanded schedule by incorporating full day and half day camps. You may also choose whether you want a 1 day, 2 day, 3 day, or a 4 day as well as AM, PM, or All Day camps.
We hope that you will consider teaching/leading a camp for us this summer. We are beginning the scheduling process for the 2015 “fun” camps and are excited to hear from you. Attached is a camp planning sheet. Please contact Shannon Langford (shannon.langford@hshawks.com) or Kim Marx (kim.marx@hshawks.com) with any questions you may have.
Again, thank you for considering volunteering your time to teach a camp. We look forward to working with you.
Sincerely yours,
Stephen Pummel
Superintendent of Schools

Video Production Class PSA Contest

The Hay Springs Video Production Class has made a Public Service Announcement video and entered it into the Nebraska “Click It, Don’t Risk It PSA Video Contest.” We are asking you to get on Twitter and YouTube to vote on our entry. This contest is a great opportunity for Nebraska high school students to create a :30 second public service announcement (PSA) to creatively express their views on seat belts and why they are important.  Four winners will be chosen, one from each class (Class A, B,C,D) – each winner will receive $2,000, and their PSA will run at a local movie theater in or near its community!  So, go to YouTube and “Like” our video, use the #CIDRI2015 and the #HSHSVideo hashtags on Twitter, and be sure to like and share this post on Facebook.

Elementary HAL Presentations

In September elementary HAL(High Ability Learners) students were challenged to discover or investigate one of their passions and then reflect and share their learning with others. This idea, adapted from the search-engine, Google, promotes the thinking that if you allow people to work on something that interests them, productivity will increase. Students needed to make their project “Product Focused”, meaning at the end of the semester, they had to have made something that was a completed product. Throughout the first semester, students diligently worked on their Passion Projects. The students all did an amazing job, and I am so proud of each of them. On January 20th, students presented their finished products to their families.

HSPS Recognized Legislative Resolution

Hay Springs Public Schools was just notified that Senator Al Davis presented this Legislative Resolution to the One Hundred Fourth Legislature recently.  The Legislative Resolution recognizes Hay Springs Public Schools for their academic gains and successes.  Please take the time to read the resolution and the accomplishments that were recognized.

Hay Springs Public Schools is proud of the improvement and success we have obtained over the last five years.  The overall success can be attributed directly to the students, parents, staff, community, and Board of Education.   By working as a team, supporting each other, and recognizing the importance, value, and how an excellent education will benefit the students in the community we have managed to provide an excellent education for all of our students.

Please share the attached link to the Legislative Resolution with friends and family.  This is an accomplishment that few schools receive.
