AWW TEAM! The Hay Springs Lady Hawks played their first game during the triangular on Tuesday, September 6. They played against Banner County in the first game and then the third game they faced off against Hemingford. The Lady Hawks came out on top in two games against Banner County winning 25-14 and 25-19. They also came out on top against Hemingford winning 25-22 and 25-23. The ladies have officially started off their season with a perfect 2-0 record.

After the game head Coach Lisa Hughes was asked how she thought the game went. She responded with, “I was happy with how the first two games went. We found out where our weak areas are and we will concentrate on those in the next several practices. Great start!”

She was also asked what her goals for the season are and she said, “I would love to see us win a sub-district and district title as well as our fifth conference title, but to do that we will need to work hard in practices. We need to improve every game and have fun.”

First Varsity Football Game

The Hay Springs varsity football team had their first game of the year Friday, September 2nd. The team traveled to South Dakota to meet Rapid City Christian School. The Hawks came up just short in an overtime nail-biter. The final score was Rapid City Christian 42, Hay Springs 40.

Tight-end Marc Sandberg said, “It was a disappointing loss because we knew we could have beaten them if we had played better in the first half.”

Lister Sage Keys

The public has been contacting the school and asking how to obtain keys for the Lister Sage Community Building.

The school is only responsible for giving out keys to the coaches. The keys that the coaches have are normal keys that work in every door entering the facility. Keys that are available to the public are button keys. These keys are magnetic and only work on one door entering the upper balcony of the gym. If you are interested in acquiring a key for your personal use please contact Seth Terrell, at 308-232-4680. To get a key you must be at least eighteen years of age and need to be very responsible. The cost of the key is $25.

Oink Oink! Mrs. Anderson took part in this year’s Friendly Festival Hog Wrestling Contest. She and her partner, Heather Housh, placed second in their division,winning $25 each. Three children out of her class also participated; they were Toby Scherbarth, Braydon Binger, and Hally Johnson. Each of the kids won $10; in addition to that Toby took first place in his age group.

Mrs. Anderson said, “It was fun but I was exhausted by the end! The pigs were huge!”

Shhh… There have been a few questions concerning the Accelerated Reader Program. Mrs. Matthews was kind enough to answer them.

This program is available to monitor and assess a student’s reading abilities. The purpose of the program is to determine whether a student has read and comprehended a given book. Reading is a very valuable skill for all people to have. The more people read the better their comprehension and reading skills become. There are three different levels of books at which to read: UG (grades nine – twelve), MG (grades four -eight), and LG (K-three). The website ARbookfind.com is helpful in determining the level of a book. The website will also tell the InterestLevel, Reading Level, and number of points for each book. There is also additional information about a book on the website. Using the websites Accelerated Reader Online or ARbookfind.com,readers are able to find out if the book that they want to read has a test. With a test a reader can find how well they have comprehended a book.

There are 15,000 books for the UG level, 50,000 for the MG level, and 55,000 for the LG level. For any further questions please contact Mrs. Matthews.

WaHoo! The ladies at the Hay Spring Public Swimming Pool were very busy on the Saturday of Friendly Festival. There were plenty of fun games such as, greased watermelon, relay duck races, the coin game, a biggest splash contest, and a belly flop contest. The prizes of the games were pop, candy, Gatorade, jerky, and toys. The pool almost reached its full capacity with 102 kids in one day. The life-guards supervising the activities were Brook Scherbarth, Kerisa Marx, Ashton Hughes, Aria Hughes, and Holly Scherbarth.

Brook said “The kids had a great time trying to gather all the coins out of the pool and no one got hurt.”

Just Keep Running

Run, run, run as fast as you can! This year the cross country team has tripled in size. Their previous numbers have been three to four, but this year there are twelve runners.

The first meet will be on Friday September second in Gering at one o’clock p.m.

Mrs. Mandelko said, “I am very confident about this season.”
